Natural Stone

Slate Flagstone
Natural stone, also referred to as flagstone or fieldstone, remains one of the most-requested options for hardscaping, specifically for walkways, patios and stacked walls. Local slate products are primarily used since it’s quarried right here in the Maritimes - its durability and weather-resistance give it the edge when compared to other natural stone products, such as limestone or sandstone.
What to Put in Between the Stones?
As important as the stone itself is what shows between the cracks, and we want our clients to enjoy the variety and creativity of the many possibilities. Consult with us about the choice of perennial plants (creeping thyme is an all-time favourite!), pea gravel, mulch, or polymeric sand to determine what will best suit your needs.
Where Flagstone Works Best
Flagstone is particularly suitable for so-called "secondary" walkways and patios, i.e. for areas with less foot traffic. There are a few reasons for this:

1. The flagstone itself is not always smooth or level, making it more of a trip hazard than other materials.
2. Flagstone, as a natural stone, can be slippery when wet, and does not tolerate heavy salt applications.

As long as you know about these limitations, flagstone is a beautiful and versatile hardscaping product.
